The Ethereum Foundation has published a sweeping new mandate that redefines how it sees its role, its limits, and the future direction of the world’s second-largest blockchain. The message from Vitalik Buterin is unusually direct: Ethereum is not trying to win the adoption race. It is trying to be the last line of defence for digital freedom. The document positions Ethereum as what the Foundation calls sanctuary technology, a network designed specifically to preserve self-sovereignty, resist censorship, and ensure that no single organisation, government, or ideology can achieve total control over cyberspace. At the heart of the mandate is a framework the Foundation calls CROPS: Censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. These four properties are described as non-negotiable, the bedrock on which everything Ethereum builds must rest. Not guidelines. Not aspirations. Hard requirements.
